African Market Watch: Thursday, 19th February 2015
Kenya: The NSE 20 gained 27.77 points in today’s trading to close at 5,473.81, as telecommunication giant Safaricom touched an all-time high and beer maker East African Breweries Limited (EABL) traded at the highest price in the last one year. While the Nairobi All Share Index went up 1.48 points to close at 175.65. The top gainer today was Limuru Tea, rising 9.54 percent to close at KES 1,114.00. The top loser was Pan Africa Insurance, shaving off 6.78 percent to close at KES 110.00. At the close of the day’s trading, volume of shares traded was recorded at 22.05mn shares, down 28.96 percent. Furthermore, turnover was recorded at KES 1,069.98mn, down 0.67 percent from yesterday’s turnover. While top mover was E.A. Breweries with a turnover of KES 345.808mn, representing 32.32 percent of the day’s total market turnover. Likewise, foreign buys stood at 25.20 percent of total turnover, while foreign sales stood at 24.41 percent of total turnover.
Rwanda: The RSE ALSI and the RSE RSI remained constant at 236.14. Total volumes stood at 17,800 shares while total turnover stood at RWF 6.60mn.
Tanzania: The DSEI went up by 0.35 percent to close the day’s trading at 2,752.57. The DSE TSI went up 0.56 percent to close at 5,002.66. With an 8.33 percent decline, today’s top loser was TOL Gases, closing at TZS 550.00. The top gainer was Tanzania Breweries which grew 1.26 percent to close at TZS 14,500.00. The volume of shares traded closed at 1.66mn shares, while total turnover was recorded at TZS 19.37bn at the close of trading today. On Pre-Arranged board, Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) counter had 1,277,295 shares traded at TZS 14,500 per share in 1 deal. CRDB Bank counter had 132,118 shares traded at weighted average price of TZS 485 per share in 24 deals. National Microfinance Bank (NMB) counter had 2,428 shares traded at weighted average price of TZS 4,270 per share in 9 deals. DCB Commercial Bank (DCB) counter had 150 shares traded at weighted average price of TZS 890 per share in 2 deals. Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) counter had 43,950 shares traded at weighted average price of TZS 14,500 per share in 20 deals. TOL Gas Limited (TOL) counter had 197,126 shares traded at weighted average price of TZS 550 per share in 7 deals. Tanzania Portland Cement Co. Ltd (TWIGA) counter had 600 shares traded at weighted average price of TZS 3,890 per share in 4 deals. SWISSPORT counter had 4,387 shares traded at weighted average price of TZS 5,320 per share in 15 deals.
South Africa: The industrial sector led gains on the JSE today, helping to boost the All Share 0.57% higher by close of trade. Petmin (PET) was amongst the top ten gainers on Thursday, with shares rising 10.77% to R1.44 after 42 deals exchanged a total of 789,875 shares. Retailer Truworths International (TRU) rose 6.76% to R87.01 after investors traded 5,579,976 shares in 4,978 deals.Falling 5.14% was Astrapak (APK) as 6 deals saw the sale of 311,752 shares, pushing the share price down to R4.98 by 5pm. Also amongst the top losers was Prescient (PCT), whose shares slid 4.55% to R1.05 after 20 deals traded 444,181 shares.
Uganda: The USE ALSI grew 0.25 percent to close at 2,070.07, as the USE LSI shrank 1.37 percent to close at 320.06. Standard Bank shed 2.86 percent to close at UGX 34.00. Total volume was recorded at 2.37mn shares while total turnover was recorded at UGX 100.46. Stanbic Bank Uganda (SBU) maintained its lead on the bourse with a turnover of UGX 78.55Mn from the 2,311,157 shares traded. New Vision Printing and Publishing Company Ltd (NVL), UMEME LIMITED (UMEME) and Bank of Baroda Uganda (BOBU) are other counters that traded 18,520 shares, 13,522 shares and 31,575 shares to record turnovers of UGX 11.149Mn, UGX 6.78Mn and UGX 3.9Mn respectively.
Zambia: The Lusaka Stock Exchange All Share Index closed at 6,184.32 points up by 0.26% in comparison to the previous close of 6,168.50 points. A price change was recorded in CEC-K0.04. Trading was also recorded in ZANACO, MFIN, SCZ and ZSUG. A total of 24,471 shares were traded in 10 trades resulting in a total turnover of K37,495. The market capitalization was recorded at K66, 724,000,000, including Shoprite Holdings Plc, and K31,485,000,000 excluding Shoprite Holdings Plc.
Zimbabwe: The industrial index closed the day in the green as Econet and Delta continued with their dominance in the market. Econet traded a total of 955k shares to close the session off at 55c, while Delta traded 412k shares to close at 116c. Other movers included Pearl (2.80c), Seedco (104c) and ZPI (1.20c). On the downside; the cement maker PPC lost 5 cents to close at 185 cents, FBCH eased 0.50 cents to trade at 7.50 cents and MASH (MASH.zw) retreated 0.10 cents to settle at 2.60 cents. The Mining index was 5.66 points (10.64%) lower at 47.56 points after BINDURA and RIOZIM (RIOZ.zw) were offered lower at 4 cents and 12 cents respectively.
