African Market Watch: Wed, 8th April 2015

BRVM [The Regional Stock Exchange, Cote d’Ivoire]:
BRVM (The Regional Stock Exchange of eight West Africa) closed its trading session today, higher than the previous day for BRVM 10 index, and lower for BRVM Composite. BRVM 10 index rose from 269.02pts to 269.11pts, a gain of 0.03%. BRVM Composite index lost 0.79% to 259.98pts against 262.04pts previously. The equity market capitalization was recorded at XOF 6,415.10 billion. Likewise, the traded value was recorded at XOF 462.256 million and total volumes recorded at 363,216 shares in 194 transactions. The top security by volume and valued traded were Ecobank Transnational Incorporated Togo with 344 100 traded shares and Total Senegal with XOF 201.529 million total traded values respectively. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with four advancers and ten decliners. On the one hand, top price gainer was CIE Cote d’Ivoire rose by 2.85% to close at XOF 71,995 and top price loser was Bank of Africa Benin fell by 7.50% to close at XOF 101,750.

Botswana:
The Botswana Stock Exchange’s (BSE) domestic index went up by 1.36pts to close at 9,738.56pts (with year-to-year performance 2.49%) and foreign index remained the same as last previous trading day to close at 1571.11pts (year-to-date of performance -0.42%). The market capitalization was recorded at BWP 378,281 million, the total volume and turnover were recorded at 170,185 shares and BWP 312,133 respectively. The market sentiment was positive today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with one advancer and zero decliner. Wilderness leaped up by BWP 0.05 to trade at a new 12 month high of BWP 3.50 ahead of its year-end results.

Egypt:
The Egyptian Stock Exchange (EGX) end on positive territory with market capitalization added EGP 5.97 billion to close at EGP 508,786 billion. The benchmark index EGX30 inched up 0.83% to close at 8,788.9 points. The small and mid-cap index EGX70 went down by 0.11% to 495.16 points and the broader EGX100 edged up by 0.15% to 1,008.01 points. The market sentiment was positive today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with 71 advancers and 69 decliners. TransOceans Tours Egypt topped the gainers, surging 11.11% to close at US$0.10 while the Wadi Kom Ombo Land Reclamation led the losers, falling 7.72% to close at EGP 9.09. Turnover amounted to EGP 2.9 billion, while traded volume reached around 177,900 shares sealed through 22,900 transactions. Local traders were sellers by EGP 96.6 million, while foreign and Arab traders were buyers by EGP 92.8 million and EGP 3.8 million, respectively. Meanwhile, retail traders – except for Arabs – were net sellers, while institutions were net buyers, particularly foreign ones.

Ghana:
Ghana Stock exchange ended positive today, with the benchmark Composite index went up by 13.03pts (0.59%) to 2,237.46pts; this brings its year-to-date performance to -1.04%. Likewise, the financial index fell by 18.04pts (+0.81%) to close at 2,240.68pts (-0.13% year-to-date performance). The market capitalization was recorded at GHS 64,293 billion. A market activity measured by volume was recorded at 294,116 shares changing hands in eleven stocks. The market sentiment was positive today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with four advancers and two decliners. UT Bank Ghana, Ecobank Transnational Incorporation Togo, Ghana Commercial Bank, and Ecobank Ghana gained 5.26%, 3.70%, 2.12% and 0.52% to close GHS 0.20, GHS 0.28, GHS 5.31 and GHS 7.70 respectively. However, the losers were CAL Bank Ghana and Societe Generale Bank Ghana fell by 0.94%  (to closet at GHS 1.05) and 1.96% (to close at GHS 1.00) respectively.

Kenya:
The NSE 20 Index lost 37.41pts (-0.72%) to close at 5,142.35pts today. Likewise, Nairobi All Share Index went down by 0.35pts (-0.20%) to close at 170.80pts with total market capitalization at KES 2,384.57 billion. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with thirteen advancers and twenty four decliners. The number of shares traded today was 37.398 million with a turnover of KES 913.014 million in 1,976 transactions. Sasini Limited Kenya was the top gainer of the day went up 6.71% to close at KES 15.10. However, Limuru Tea Company Limited Kenya was the top loser of the day, losing 11.65% to close the day at KES 993.00.

Malawi:
Both Malawi All Share Index and Domestic Index remained unchanged to close at 15,458.15pts and 12,196.76pts respectively. Likewise, the foreign Index remained unchanged to close at 1762.13pts.Total market capitalization was recorded at MWK 7,534.07 billion; a total volume was recorded at 331,004 shares in six transactions and turnover of MWK 12.931 million. The market sentiment was neutral today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with zero advancer and zero decliner.

Mauritius:
Both indices end in negative territory today, the Semdex went down by 0.09% to close 1,962.40pts and the Sem-10 gave up 0.14% to 371.97pts. The market capitalization was recorded at MUR 218.174 billion and overall turnover on the market amounted to MUR 199.5 million mainly geared towards MCB Group and SBM Holdings Limited which together accounted for 84.2% of total market turnover. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with four advancers and five decliners. Topping the price gainers were Go Life International PCC (USD) Mauritius, Rockcastle Global Real Estate (USD) Mauritius, and CIM Financial Services Limited rose by 25.00%, 7.69% and 1.88% to close at US$0.05, US$2.80 and MUR 8.66 respectively. On the other hand, the losers were Lottotech Mauritius, Bluelife Limited Mauritius and TERRA lost 3.39% to close at MUR 5.70), 1.76% (to close at MUR 5.58) and 1.39% (to close at MUR 32.00) respectively.

Morocco: 
Morocco’s benchmark stock index (MASI Index) lost 0.41% to close at 9,943.12pts (3.36% year-to-date performance) with total market capitalization at MAD 502.413 billion and market activities as measured value was closed at MAD 66.393 million. Likewise, Moroccan most active share index (MADEX) closed at 8,147.85pts (fell by 0.42% compared to previous trading day). In term of sector performance, top gainers were Electrical & Electronic Equipment, Transport and Real Estate sectors gained 2.32%, 1.62% and 0.37% respectively. On the loser side Engineering & Equipment Industrial Goods, Construction & Building Materials and Forestry & Paper sectors fell by 2.38%, 2.24% and 1.26% respectively. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with 13 advancers and 19 decliners. Rebab Company S.A. Limited Morocco tops price gainers at 6.00% to close at MAD 106.00 while Societe Fenie Brossette Morocco tops the price losers by 6.14% to close at MAD 146.05. Furthermore, FTSE CSE Morocco 15 Index lost 0.23% to close at 8,761.58pts (-0.67% year-to-date performance) and FTSE CSE Morocco All-Liquid Index dropped 0.34% to close at 8,368.04pts (3.81% year-to-date performance).

Nigeria:
Nigerian equity market sustained yet another decline today, as the benchmark index dipped 2.2% for the second day to close at 34,175.24pts.  Likewise, market capitalization fell by NGN 260.4 billion to close at NGN 11.6 trillion. Market activity was mixed as the volume traded rose by 21.0% after 704.1 million shares were traded, while value traded declined 43.9% to close at NGN 4.7 trillion. On the sector basis the Oil & Gas index posted the highest decline of 3.6%, Banking sector (-3.6%),  the Industrial Goods (-3.2%), Consumer Goods (-1.9%) and Insurance (-1.9%) sector indices followed in that order. Market breadth measured by advancers/decliners ratio also weakened, settling at 0.2x as 10 stocks advanced against 44 decliners. A.G. Leventis (Nigeria) Plc (gained 9.7%), Costain West Africa PLC Nigeria (rose by 7.9%) and Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc Nigeria (advanced by 6.4%) topped the gainers’ chart.  On the other hand, topping the losers’ chart were Oando Plc Nigeria (fell by 9.7%), UAC Property Limited Nigeria (declined by 7.5%) and WAPIC Insurance (shed off 7.0%).

Rwanda:
The Rwandan Stock Exchange All Share Index (RSE ALSI) and RSE RSI remained unchanged to close at 137.25pts and 233.95pts respectively. The market capitalization was recorded at RWF 2,927 billion, and the market activity measured as volume and turnover were recorded at 200 shares and RWF 59,000 in one transaction (only in Bank of Kigali share). The prices for all share remained unchanged.

South Africa:
The Jonesburg Stock Exchange All Share closed up 0.40% following strong demand for resource stocks. Industrials were up 0.46% and resource stocks were ahead 0.64%. The market sentiment was positive today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with 209 advancers and 157 decliners. Among the top performers today was Comair Ltd which rose by 4.70% to close at ZAR 5.35 per share after 362,291 shares were traded through 231 deals. Allied Electrical Corporation South Africa gained 4.77% to close at ZAR 12.53 per share with 294,977 shares being sold in 17 deals. Feeling the brunt of the market were Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited South Africa which lost 5.55% to close at ZAR 22.47 per share after 819,294 shares were sold in 942 deals. In addition, in the red was Gold Fields Limited which was down 4.03% to ZAR 49.75 per share after 1189 deals sold 676,247 shares.   

Tanzania:

The Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSEI) remained unchanged to close at 2,668.04pts and market capitalisation recorded at TZS 23,532.89 billion. However, the DSE TSI declined by 12.39pts to close at 4,800.44pts. Today, DSE recorded a total turnover of TZS 88.74 million from 42,518 shares traded in 57 deals compared to the previous session which recorded a turnover of TZS 2,704.37 million from 4,960,650 shares traded in 119 deals. The market sentiment was positive today, with four advancers and two decliners. On the gainers’ side were Uchumi Supermarket Limited (gained 4.47% to close at TZS 220.00), Acacia Mining Plc Tanzania (rose by 3.37% to trade at TZS 7,370.00), Tanzania Portland Cement Company (advanced by 2,56% to close TZS 4,000.00) and East African Breweries Limited (rose by 2.25% to settle at TZS 6,360). While on the losers’ table were National Media Group (Kenya), Tanzania Breweries Limited, and Jubilee Holdings Limited fell by 2.41%, 1.00% and 0.09% to close at TZS 4,450, TZS 14,850 and TZS  11,000 respectively.

Tunisia:

The Tunis Stock Exchange benchmark index (TUNINDEX) decreased by 20.63pts (0.38%) to close at 5364.27pts (year-to-date performance of 4.32%) with the market capitalization at TND 18.560 billion. Today’s turnover amounted to TND 5.061 million, while traded volume 552,238 shares. The market sentiment was negative today, as the market breadth (advancer/decliners ratio) with 19 advancers and 27 decliners. On the one hand, topping the price gainers were Societe Tunisienne de Banque, Societe Tunisienne des Industries de Pneumatiques Tunisia and Manufacture de Panneaux Bois du Sud Tunisa gained 5.79%, 5.07% and 3.18% to trade at TND 4.75, TND 1.45 and TND 7.14 respectively. On the other hand, topping the price losers were Societe d’Articles Hygieniques Tunisia fell by 4.03% to settle at TND 12.85, Electrostar Tunisia declined by  2.95% to traded at TND 6.58 and Societe Tunisienne d’Entreprises de Telecommunication shaved off 2.77% to close at TND 2.46.

Zambia:
The Lusaka Stock Exchange All Share Index remained unchanged to close at 6,119.53pts in comparison to the previous close. The market capitalization was recorded at ZMK 65.451 billion, including Shoprite Holdings Plc, and ZMK 31.212 billion excluding Shoprite Holdings Plc. A total of 707,982 shares changed hands in 14 trades yielding a market turnover of ZMK 222,137, recorded in BATA Zambia, Copperbelt Energy Corporation, Prima Reinsurance Zambia, Zanaco and CCH Zambia.

Zimbabwe:
The Industrial index shed off 1.03pts (0.66%) to close at 155.76pts, with total market capitalization of US$4.039 billion. Today’s total turnover was recorded at US$1.551 million in 39 transactions. The market sentiment was negative today, with four advancers and six decliners. Old Mutual Zambia retreated by 7 cents to trade at 245 cents, Hippo Zimbabwe lost 3 cents to trade at 45 cents and Meikles Hotels Zimbabwe dropped 0.75 cents to 10.75 cents. Delta Corporation Limited Zimbabwe and Seed Co Limited both traded 0.50 cents lower at 102 cents and 101.50 cents respectively. The losses were countered by gains in African Distillers Zimbabwe which rose by a further 3 cents to trade at 50 cents and Fidelity Life Insurance Zimbabwe added 2.62 cents to settle at 7.62 cents. OK Zimbabwe moved up 0.10 cents to 10.10 cents and Pelhams Limited Zimbabwe increased by 0.01 cents to close at 0.04 cents.
