African Market Watch: Wednesday, 18th February 2015
Kenya: The NSE 20 increased by 42.32 points in today’s trading to close at 5,446.04. The NASI Index went up 1.27 points to close at 174.17. The top gainer today was Kakuzi, rising 8.25 percent to close at KES 315.00. The top loser was BOC Kenya, shaving off 5.66 percent to close at KES 150.00. At the close of the day’s trading, volumes of shares traded were recorded at 31.04mn shares, up 68.88 percent. Turnover was recorded at KES 1,077.15mn, up 57.98 percent from yesterday’s turnover. Today’s top mover was Equity Group with a turnover of KES 247.48mn, representing 22.98 percent of the day’s total market turnover. Likewise, foreign buys stood at 52.22 percent of total turnover, while foreign sales stood at 40.56 percent of total turnover.
Mauritius: The Official Market improved in today’s session, with the Semdex gaining 0.40%. Top price gainers are: Go Life International PCC (USD) (+25%), Lottotech Ltd (+15.7%) and Rogers & Co. Ltd (+1.7%). Top price losers are: Air Mauritius Ltd (-6.4%), BlueLife Limited (-1.8%) and Fincorp Investment Ltd (-1.7%). Most volume-traded stocks are: SBM Holdings Ltd, CIEL Limited and The Mauritius Development Investment Trust Ltd. Most value-traded stocks are: MCB Group Limited, New Mauritius Hotels Ltd, and Terra Mauricia Ltd. The Sem-10 improved by 42 basis points in today’s session, with the top price gainer being Rogers & Co. Ltd (+1.7%) and top price loser being New Mauritius Hotels Ltd (-0.4%). The Demex improved by 5 basis points for today’s session. The top price gainers of the day are: ENL Ltd (Preference) (+2.4%), and Ciel Textile Ltd (+1.4%). The top price losers of the day are: Medical & Surgical Centre Ltd (-1.7%), and Les Moulins de La Concorde Ltée (Ordinary) (-1.3%).
Rwanda: The RSE ALSI gained 0.50 percent in today’s trading to close at 137.51. The RSE RSI remained constant at 236.14. Total volumes stood at 5,200 shares while total turnover stood at RWF 1.75mn.
South Africa: Today there was subdued interest in the JSE as the overall index slid 0.56% lead south by resources which were down 1.27% and gold mining shares retreated 1.44%. Metair Investments (MTA) rose 9.29% to trade at R33.99 per share as investors bought 1,814,082 share in 654 deals. Adcock Ingram Hldgs Ltd (AIP) climbed 5.93% to trade at R50.00 per share through 961 deals moving 1,431,017 shares. In the top losers was Sasol Ltd (SOL) which lost 5.95% to drop to R444.97 per share through 13612 trades selling 4,384,446 shares. Quantum Foods Holdings Ltd (QFH) lost 9.29% to trade at R3.32 per share through a sell off of 974,547 shares in 88 deals.
Tanzania: the DSE recorded a total turnover of TZS 22,411.09 mln from 1,553,297 shares traded in 90 deals compared to the previous session which recorded a turnover of TZS 342.07 mln from 71,944 shares traded in 62 deals. The DSEI shed 0.40 percent to close the day’s trading at 2,744.05, as the DSE TSI lost 0.64 percent to close at 4,974.71. With a 5.56 percent decline, today’s top loser was Tanga Cement Company (SIMBA), closing at TZS 17,000.00. The top gainer was Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) which grew 1.49 percent to close at TZS 14,320.00. The volume of shares traded closed at 1.55mn shares, while total turnover was recorded at TZS 22.13bn at the close of trading today.
Uganda: The USE ALSI grew 0.45 percent to close at 2,064.99. The USE LSI also went up by 1.36 percent to close at 324.49. The top gainer today was National Insurance Corporation which appreciated 11.11 percent to close at UGX 16.00. The volume of shares traded today closed at 12.68mn shares, and total turnover closed at UGX 683.61mn. SBU toppled UMEME from the number one spot to second position having gained on its price as 11,745,897 shares were crossed on its counter to realize UGX 405.93Mn in turnover. UMEME on the other hand traded 530,096 shares generating UGX 266.6Mn in turnover. NIC lost two shillings to trade 400,000 shares generating UGX 6.4Mn in turnover.
Zimbabwe: The Industrial index went down by 0.20 points (0.12%) to close at 168.53 points. NATFOODS lost 10 cents to trade at 310 cents and ECONET dropped 0.30 cents to trade at 54.50 cents. While SEEDCO gained 2 cents to 104 cents. In addition, the Mining index slipped 4.42 points (7.67%) to close at 53.22 points after BINDURA shed 0.49 cents to close at 4.50 cents.
