African Union Secures 300 Million Doses of Sputnik V Vaccine
LAGOS (Capital Markets in Africa) — The African Union has secured 300 million doses of Russia’s Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine.
The shots will be available for 12 months starting in May, the AU said in a statement on Friday. Finance has been arranged for countries that want to purchase the vaccine.
The deal adds to the 270 million doses the AU has arranged to get from Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer Inc. and AstraZeneca Plc.
“African Union member states that wish to secure funding should approach the African Export-Import Bank through their central banks, as has been the case with the other vaccines that have been on offer,” according to the statement.
Last week the lender approved $2 billion for participating suppliers, allowing the finalization of supply contracts. The Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team was set up by the AU to acquire additional vaccine doses so that the continent can attain a target immunization of 60%. The continent has more than 3.79 million cases of Covid-19 and 100,294 deaths, according to the Africa CDC.
