Botswana, Capital Markets in Africa — The Botswana Stock Exchange Equity Markets bear continued to take hold as the Domestic Composite Index (DCI), Domestic Financial Sector Index (DFSI) and the Local Asset Sector Index (LASI) returned losses today. Market capitalisation dropped further with price gains made in three stocks and only one price decrease recorded in the listed tradeable securities of the day.
The Botswana Domestic Composite Index (DCI) lost by 17 points or 0.16 percent to close 10,579.68 points from its previous close of 10,596 points recorded in the previous session.
Likewise, the Local Asset Sector Index (LASI) was also down after the days trading closing at 792.77 losing 0.16 points from its previous close of 792.93 points, a change of 0.02 percent (LASI is made up of the domestic companies and all foreign companies awarded the local asset status by the Ministry of Finance and development planning).
The Foreign Composite Index (FCI) continued in a neutral position to close 1,562.90 points after the days trading closing 0.00 percent or 0.02 points down from its previous close of 1562.92 points.
The Domestic financial Sector index (DFSI) which is composed of all domestic financial sector companies, decreased by 0.28 percent after the days trading to close on 1229.10 points down 3.47 points from the 1232.57 points previously recorded.
The market capitalisation settled at BWP 418,821.87 million with the Domestic Equity BWP accounting for BWP 50,151.11 million and the Foreign Equity Main Board accounting for BWP 368,670.75 million.
From a market activity perspective, the total daily volume settled at 1,184,283 shares traded which were exchanged from the 24,228 million Securities issued bringing the total turnover of those shares traded on the domestic and foreign main boards to BWP 8,652,343.11 million.
Leading the market activity in terms of the traded volumes were FNBB with 539,459 Barclays recording volumes of 216,291, BIHL recording volume figures of 138,547 followed by Choppies with 128,973.
In terms of price gainers and price losers there was three price gainers and two price loser today leaving market breadth positive, Barclays was up 1 point to close at BWP 435 per share, BIHL was up 1 point to close at BWP 1478 per share, Cresta was up 1 point to close at BWP 103 per share.
The price losers were Choppies was down 1 point to close at BWP 420 per share and Sefalana was down 1 point to close at BWP 1300 per share
