Accra, Ghana (Capital Markets in Africa):- On Monday, the Ghanaian Stock Exchange (GSE) ended in positive mood. The market capitalization added GHS 236 million to close at GHS 63,652 million relative to market capitalization of GHS 63,421 million recorded at the previous trading session.
The benchmark composite index soared by 5.44 points or 0.25 percent to close the day at 2,169.66 points, representing a year-to-date performance 0f -4.04 percent. On the contrary, the financial Index declined by 9.93 points or 0.46 percent to trade at 2,142.01 points with a year-to-date return of -4.53 percent.
From the market activity perspective, the total volume was 169,852 (a fall of about 51.89 percent from the previous trading sessions total volume of 383,039 shares) and total traded value was GHS 74,591 (down by 80.53 percent compared with previous trading session value of GHS 383,036). Ecobank Transnational Incorporation had 126,900 shares (almost 74.71 percent of the total volume) to value at GHS 41,877 (about 56.14 percent of the total value traded). Other most actively traded stocks were UT Bank (recorded 20,100 shares at GHS 2,413), Societe Generale (recorded a volume of 10,800 shares valued at GHS 9,828), SIC Insurance (registered 3,300 shares valued at GHS 561) and CAL Bank (traded 3,279 shares with total value of GHS 3,213). The top five most actively traded stocks by volume accounted for almost 97 percent of the total volume and about 77 percent of the total value traded.
Looking at the price movers and shakers, out of the 16 traded securities via 162 transactions, three gainers and four losers were recorded, so the market breath/sentiment ended negative. Aluworks fell to GHS 0.05 by losing GHS 0.01 or 16.67 percent, Mechanical Lloyd ended at GHS 0.16 after falling by 5.88 percent and Standard Chartered Bank plunged by 0.47 percent. Ghana Commercial Bank went down by 0.25 percent to end at GHS 4.07.
Ecobank Transnational Incorporation surged to GHS 0.33 from GHS 0.32 by gaining 3.13 percent and HFC Bank climbed by 0.77 percent to end at GHS 1.31. Fan Milk also rose by 0.17 percent to end at GHS 5.95.
