JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, Capital Markets in Africa — The South Africa equity backed to positive mood after a day in negative territory. Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All Share index closed 0.58 percent or 305.46 points higher to close at 53,063.06 points. The JSE Top 40 index also added 402.10 points or 0.85 percent to end at 47,643.86 points.
Looking at the sector indices, JSE financial sector index fell by 0.65 percent to end at 43,925.77 points. Both Industrial and industrial 25 sector indexes gained 1.29 percent to close at 78,677.42 points and surged by 1.53 percent to settle at 70,848.21 points respectively. The resource index lost 0.85 percent or 315.71 points to close at 36,697.97 points and the gold mining sector index marginally lost 0.04 percent or 0.50 points with a closing level of 1,118.58 points.
From the market strength/breath (measured as ratio of gainers to losers), the market recorded 133 price ups, 223 price downs and 62 remained unchanged, hence market strength/breathe closed negative. Out of the top leaders was Trans Hex Group Limited, whose shares gained 17,60 percent to close at ZAR 2.94 after investors exchanged 23,719 shares. Santova Limited surged by 10.41 percent after traded 78,254 shares, boosting the share price to ZAR 3.50. Sabmiller Plc also soared by 9.97 percent to end at ZAR 805.00 after investors traded 5,771,514 shares. Efficient Group Ltd gained 8.05 percent to end at ZAR 4.70 after exchanged a total of 20,000 shares. Trematon Capital Imvestments Limited rose by 6.94 percent to end at ZAR 3.85 after trading 3,700 shares.
On the other hand, Central Rand Gold Limited whose shares reduce to ZAR 2.20 after 31,100 shares were bought and sold, resulting in a reduction of 18.52 percent. Delta Emd Limited sagged by 16.67 percent to close at ZAR 2.50, after 25,000 shares were traded. Putprop Ltd plummeted by 15.80 percent to trade at ZAR 6.02 a share after investors bought and sold 13,767 shares. Arcelormittal Sa Limited sagged by 11.63 percent to trade at ZAR 11.40 after 481,683 traded deals. After investors bought and sold 800 shares, Mix Telematics Limited fell by 9.52 percent to trade at ZAR 2.85.
On the currency markets front, the South rand was weaker against US dollar at ZAR 13.4849 after depreciating by 1.25 percent and against British pound to close at ZAR 20.4983 after losing 0.42 percent. Also, the rand depreciated by 1.30 percent against the Euro to close at ZAR 15.3283.
