South Africa Market Watch | 5th Aug 2015: JSE All Share index adds 0.64%, Resource sector tops gainers, adds 3.5%….
Johannesburg, South Africa (Capital Markets in Africa) — Johannesburg Stock Exchange continued in the positive region at the end of the trading session. Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) All Share surged by 336.37 or 0.64 percent to close at 52,774.21 points. The JSE Top 40 index also added 0.73 percent or 341.52 points to end at 47,259.06 points.
Similarly, Financial sector index climbed by 0.11 percent or 50.56 points to close at 46,360.41 points. Both the Industrial sector index and industrial 25 index accelerated by 0.31 percent and 0.29 percent to close at 76,636.73 points and 68,471.54 points respectively. Likewise, the resource sector index added by 3.53 percent with a closing level of 36,338.64 points and the JSE Gold mining index closed up by 0.44 percent or 3.37 points at 760.74 points.
Looking at the market strength/breath, the market recorded 195 price gainers, 139 price losers and 67 that remained unchanged, hence market strength/breathe ended positive. Among the top gainers today was Rare Holdings Limited which advanced 12.50 percent to ZAR 270 per share after trading 17,007 shares. Eqstra Holdings gained 12.44 percent to close at ZAR 226 per share after 17,351,309 shares were bought. African Equity Empowerments Investments Limited surged by 9.39 percent to end at ZAR 268 and Investec Property Fund Limited advanced by 4.77 percent to settle at ZAR 1,802.
On the other side, today’s losers was Syfrets and Commercial Union Fund (SYCOM) down by -16.91 percent at ZAR 2825. Sabvest-N Limited lost -14.16 percent to end at ZAR 2703. York timber Holdings Limited and Mediclinic Internat Limited also declined by -11.39 percent at ZAR 210 and -7.98 percent at ZAR 1730 respectively.
On the currency markets front, the South rand was weaker against US dollar at ZAR 12.7697 by falling 0.24 percent and by 0.057 percent against British pound to trade at ZAR 19.9110. The rand fell by 0.36 percent against the Euro to close at ZAR 13.9219.
